The Monastery of the Dormition is in the northern part of Psara.

The monastery was built in the late 18th century at a place where a chapel already existed. During the Turkish invasion in 1824, the monks defended themselves by throwing beehives to the raiders and temporarily saving the monastery. In the library of the monastery rare manuscripts and priestly books have survived, but its most precious commodity is no longer here.

Of course we are talking about the icon of the Virgin Mary, crafted by the famous painter Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco). The island's inhabitants that escaped the destruction brought the icon to Syros, in the church of the Assumption.

Today the monastery is not active, but it still is an interesting site to visit.

Palaiokastro/Mavri Rahi is in the southwestern end of Psara.

Paleokastro protected the western side of the harbor of Psara. During the revolution of 1821, cannons and fortifications were installed here by the residents, turning it into a fortress to defend the island. The last act of resistance was here, during the Turkish invasion in June 1824. The last defenders of the island defended it vigorously and when the Turks finally broke the last line of defense, they decided to set fire to the powder keg and blast themselves, preferring a heroic death from captivity and slavery.

Today in Palaiokastro/ Mavri Rahi you will find a simple monument in honor of its defenders and some remains of the fort's walls. It is definitely worth a visit to pay tribute to the heroic people of Psara, as did the national poet Dionysios Solomos through his lyrics:

"At the full black ridge of Psara/ Glory walks alone/ studying the brilliant lads /she wears a wreath upon her hair /made from few ripe herbs /that were left in the wasteland."

Psara is one of the tourist destinations that are not characterized by a variety of choices for activities but by authenticity and natural beauty.

As a genuine Greek island, Psara has excellent beaches for swimming and an enchanting underwater world for those engaged in diving. The serenity of the area makes it ideal for all kinds of fishing. By the way, the name of the island is closely related to the Greek word for "fish", which is "psari". Who knows if there's a connection?

In the island you will be able to play football, basketball and of course beach volley. Take note that during summer, beach volley tournaments are organized on the island.

Passing Lazareta beach, head east and you'll find Limnos beach.

Limnos is a lovely and large pebbled beach, protected from the north wind. In its clear waters you will have a unique swimming experience.

Kato Gialos beach is on the southwest side of the settlement.

Kato Gialos is a beautiful pebbled beach with clear waters, overlooking Antipsara. Swim until your appetite is whet and visit the excellent taverns of the village.

Leaving the village towards the east we find Lazareta beach.

Lazareta beach is perhaps the most beautiful throughout Psara. The gorgeous golden sand awaits to embrace you as you enjoy the beautiful Greek sunshine. Once you get warm, dive into the crystal clear waters. We swear, you will not want to part with it!

Following the coastline from Archontiki northwards we reach Ftelio beach.

Ftelio beach is among the largest on the island and it is quite serene. Here you can enjoy a very quiet swim amid clear blue waters that deepen suddenly.

Right next to Lakka you will find Archontiki beach.

It is essentially a natural continuation of Lakka beach, harmoniously combining pebbles and sand. In the cool waters you will enjoy a marvellous swim overlooking Daskalio island, which once housed the school of Psara. Also note that archaeologists have unearthed tombs from the Mycenaean era on Archontiki beach and that really deserves some of your time.

Lakka beach is north of the Psara village.

Lakka is one of the largest beaches on the island, overlooking the islet of Ai Nikolaki. In the blue waters you will enjoy a relaxing swim, just make sure to go prepared as --like most beaches in Psara-- Lakka is not organized (sunbeds, umbrellas).

Katsouni beach is on the east side of Psara.

It gathers most swimmers of the island. Katsouni beach is quite protected with lovely sand and turquoise shallow waters. It is a great spot to enjoy an amazing day by the beach. Keep in mind that the village is only two steps away and you can combine your swim with an excellent meal in the taverns of the area.
