The Monastery of the Dormition is in the northern part of Psara.
The monastery was built in the late 18th century at a place where a chapel already existed. During the Turkish invasion in 1824, the monks defended themselves by throwing beehives to the raiders and temporarily saving the monastery. In the library of the monastery rare manuscripts and priestly books have survived, but its most precious commodity is no longer here.
Of course we are talking about the icon of the Virgin Mary, crafted by the famous painter Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco). The island's inhabitants that escaped the destruction brought the icon to Syros, in the church of the Assumption.
Today the monastery is not active, but it still is an interesting site to visit.
