In various parts of Naxos island, one can see the Marble Kouros.
Naxos is particularly rich in marble and this is why it had many quarries, especially in ancient times. In these quarries, the initial processing of the statues took place, before they were transferred to their installation space to acquire its final shape by the sculptor. During this process, accidents occurred, it was revealed that the marble was not good enough or in some cases the order was canceled due to economic weakness. These statues were abandoned in the quarries, and some of them are still there even today.
Several such marble Kouros can be admired in various parts of Naxos, such as:
• Near the Apollo village; a Kouros probably depicting Dionysus with a height of over ten meters.
• In Flerio; two big Kouros sculptures with damaged feet that were probably constructed in the 6th century B.C.
It is definitely worth seeing first-hand these marble Kouros!
