Brief history of Agistri

Reading ancient texts you will stumble upon Agistri island, but you won't recognize it as it was called Kekrifalia, meaning 'embellished head'. Homer refers to its participation in the Trojan War on the side of Aegina.

Archaeological findings indicate that the island was already inhabited by 5th century BC. Unfortunately, no particular historical archives survive, besides the fact that during the 17th century Agistri was deserted due to pirate raids. It is only after the 1821 Revolution, that residents started gradually returning back to the island. So, in 1835 when the first Community of Agistri was created, the island had 250 residents.
