Panagias Armatas Chruch in Spetses

The church of Panagia Armata lies over the Old Port on the headland of the Lighthouse. It was built by Ionnis Koutsis in honor of the Virgin and in commemoration of the great victory of Spetses over the Turkish fleet in 1822. It is celebrated to this day every September (the famous festival of Armata). The church was built where canons defending the island of Spetses used to be during the revolution, and in its courtyard a statue of Kosmas Barbatsis, the one to set Armata on fire, was placed (work of the famous sculptor Natalia Mela).
Lighthouse (Faros)

The famous lighthouse of Spetses is above the Old Harbor. In 1837 the first lighthouse opened in Spetses. It functioned using oil, but it no more exists. The current lighthouse opened in 1885, having a height of 11 meters. The lighthouse of Spetses differs from most lighthouses in Greece, being situated in a residential area. Untill 1986 that it became fully automated, it had a lighthouse keeper. The position of the lighthouse and the building itself is a very good reason for a pleasant walk.
