Benaki Museum in Athens

The Benaki Museum is one of the most famous museums of Athens, a few meters from Syntagma Square, in Vasilisis Sofias Avenue.

It hosts representative works of art from all eras of Greek history. The Benaki Museum was founded in 1929 by Antonis Benakis and it was originally housed in his neoclassical residence of magnificent architecture, becoming perhaps the first private museum in Greece.

Over the years, the rapid growth of exhibits forced the Benaki Museum to expand into new buildings, of which the huge cultural center of Piraeus Street 138 stands out.

In the Benaki Museum you will see over 40 000 exhibits ranging from the Neolithic to modern times, as well as Islamic and Chinese works of art.

The Benaki Museum also hosts many temporary exhibitions and cultural events of all kinds, while featuring an interesting shop.

Benaki Museum: Address Vasilisis Sofias Avenue & Koumbari 1, Athens.

More information concerning the Benaki Museum can be found in www.benaki.gr and the number 210 3671000.
